Habitas Tulum: Redefining Hospitality Through Coral Restoration

TULUM, México – Deep below the sun-kissed waves, a vibrant and delicate world thrives – coral reefs, Earth’s precious ecosystems. The Mesoamerican Reef, the world’s second-largest, stands majestically in front of Tulum, a testament to the ocean’s health and the home to countless marine species. In 2021, the visionary Olmo Torres sparked the Tulum Reef Regeneration Project, a transformative endeavor that has since blossomed into a symbol of hope and resilience.

The project’s inception traces back to November 2021 when Olmo discovered a thriving coral community. Drawing inspiration from the resilience of these “opportunity fragments,” fragments that broke off naturally due to waves and storms, Olmo and Oceanus, a non-profit specializing in coral regeneration, embarked on a mission to rejuvenate Tulum’s coral reefs. They meticulously transported over 200 coral colonies to a sacred location known as “Blue Hope,” named after Dr. Sylvia Earle’s Hope Spots. With unwavering determination, they set their sights on planting 1,000 corals, driven by a desire to restore biodiversity and bolster the reefs’ strength.

To realize this ambitious vision, Olmo and his team harnessed the power of Habitas RISE, their disruptive hospitality brand committed to community engagement and environmental stewardship. Through innovative fundraising efforts, such as concerts and guest donations, Habitas provided crucial support to Oceanus. As Olmo passionately remarked, “Our Habitas stands apart from traditional hospitality companies, actively participating in and contributing to local communities.”

The Tulum Reef Regeneration Project’s journey, however, has just begun. Set to commence its second phase in 2024, the project seeks to expand its impact manifold. Inviting local businesses and global citizens residing in Tulum, the project aims to transplant, nurture, and monitor 5,000 coral colonies annually, aligning with the UN Decade of Restoration. With comprehensive follow-up and maintenance plans in place, the project promises the sustained growth and prosperity of Tulum’s underwater paradise.

The venture doesn’t merely focus on ecological preservation; it emphasizes the critical role of local communities, whose livelihoods depend on these natural wonders. By reviving Tulum’s reefs, Habitas Tulum pays homage to the bounties bestowed by the Caribbean Sea and ensures the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.

Seeking to raise awareness, Olmo and Habitas Tulum’s co-founder Eduardo Castillo embarked on a coral restoration free dive expedition to the Blue Hope Reforestation Site on World Oceans Day in June. Olmo described the experience as profoundly transformative, “a moment of blue hope,” where he felt intrinsically connected to the ocean and the planet. This expedition also laid the groundwork for an exclusive brand experience available to guests at Habitas Tulum. Guests can actively contribute to the project through donations or by “adopting corals,” an extraordinary gift for their loved ones. The resort now offers a snorkeling experience to visit the Blue Hope Site, with plans for coral gardening and planting boot camps in the near future.
