TULUM, Mexico – In 2023, the Mexican Caribbean once again emerged as the “jewel” of Mexico’s tourism, securing six out of the top 15 positions in the U.S. News ranking of the best places to visit in Mexico. This annual ranking takes into account cultural attractions, culinary options, beaches, nightlife, traveler votes, and expert opinions.
Quintana Roo, in descending order of ranking, clinched the second spot with Tulum, the third with Cozumel, the fifth with Isla Mujeres, the sixth with Holbox, the ninth with Cancun, and the fourteenth with Playa del Carmen.
The destinations within the state, under the governance of Mara Lezama Espinosa, were highlighted by the international portal for their world-class hotels, archaeological ruins, cenotes, culinary richness, and the warmth of the local people.
For instance, Cancun was described as “a dreamy white sandy beach, nightclubs, all-inclusive resorts, and cheap flights from the U.S. make Cancun a favored destination for spring breakers and vacationers seeking an easy beach getaway.”
Tulum was particularly praised as the place where “Mexico’s most famous Mayan ruins can be found, attracting history enthusiasts and water lovers alike. Situated along a picturesque stretch of the Riviera Maya coastline.”
In response to this recognition, the governor expressed her enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Incredible! The best places to visit in Mexico are in Quintana Roo. Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, and Cancun are the favorite destinations of millions of visitors. There’s no doubt that our state has it all, which is why we are promoting the development of tourism with social justice and sustainability, ensuring that this success translates into well-being and prosperity for Quintana Roo families.”
Moving on to the neighboring state of Yucatan, Mérida was prominently featured for its cultural and architectural richness. “Mérida’s rich culture is evident on every street corner. White stone mansions line the Paseo de Montejo, while vibrant Sunday markets offer the flavor of old-world Mexico,” as described in the ranking.
For those seeking ancient Mayan ruins, there is a stroke of luck as many ancient archaeological sites are located nearby, including the famous Chichén Itzá, just 75 miles to the east. Art and museum enthusiasts also have their share of delights, with accolades for the Great Museum of the Mayan World of Mérida, as well as the city’s local art galleries and murals. Travelers will find a range of charming boutique hotels for accommodation.
