Tulum business alliance partners with Coparmex to tackle extortion threats

Tulum's business leaders and Coparmex partner with authorities to enhance security through the Centurión project, aiming to combat extortion and protect the community.

TULUM, México – In an ongoing effort to bolster security in Tulum, the Alianza Empresarial de Tulum has joined forces with the Confederación Patronal de la República Mexicana (Coparmex) and local authorities to address extortion-related crimes through the Centurión Proyectos Especiales security scheme. This collaboration represents a vital step in integrating the business sector into the municipality’s broader security strategy.

Julio Sacramento Vera, the driving force behind the Alianza Empresarial de Tulum, described the recent meeting as a constructive dialogue between entrepreneurs and law enforcement to establish a permanent relationship. “Rather than simply pointing out problems, we work together to find solutions. We want to see how we, as local business owners, can contribute to improving security in Tulum,” stated Sacramento Vera. He emphasized that while some initiatives may pause due to the impending change in local government, the authorities are actively considering mechanisms to incorporate into their long-term security plans.

The Centurión initiative has already shown significant success in Cancún, where it has effectively reduced crime, particularly extortion, through specialized protocols and coordinated efforts between businesses and law enforcement. Thirty-eight extortion cases were addressed in just three months, leading to 29 arrests in Cancún alone. Replicating this model in Tulum aims to create a safer environment for both residents and visitors, with the Alianza Empresarial playing a pivotal role in its implementation.

The Alianza Empresarial de Tulum, which comprises 34 local businesses, was born out of the need for a more localized representation of the private sector. Unlike other business chambers based in Playa del Carmen or Cancún, this alliance seeks to address the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs rooted in Tulum. According to Sacramento Vera, this organization intends to foster economic growth and social and environmental development by strengthening the local business network and creating strategic alliances with the government.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was a commitment to continue working on the Centurión strategy and expand it to Tulum. Entrepreneurs have expressed confidence that their involvement will help ensure a smoother implementation of security measures, contributing to a prosperous and safer community.

As Tulum becomes a significant tourist destination, addressing safety concerns is paramount for sustaining long-term development. This collaboration between the private sector and the authorities marks a considerable shift toward proactive security measures. With new government leadership on the horizon, the success of these efforts will hinge on maintaining open lines of communication and ongoing cooperation.

The Alianza Empresarial de Tulum is poised to be a central player in shaping the region’s safer, more secure future. Readers are invited to engage with us on social media to share their thoughts and experiences with security initiatives in Tulum.
