TULUM, México —More than 70 motorcyclists from Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancún enjoyed a unique experience this past weekend as they rode through the premises of the Tulum International Airport. The event, organized by the Mexican Air Force (FAM) and the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), was designed to strengthen ties with the civilian community, highlighting the importance of unity between the military and civilian sectors.
The ride began at the airport’s entrance, where the bikers, accompanied by units from the National Guard and Sedena, made their first stop for a group photo in front of the boarding hall. This marked the event’s official start, as engines roared to life and the convoy headed towards the 304th Air Squadron. Upon arrival, participants were greeted with a meal and an exhibition featuring military missions and equipment, giving them an inside look at the operations of the Mexican Air Force.
In an atmosphere of camaraderie and respect, the event took a solemn turn with a tribute to fallen comrades. A moment of silence was observed, with all participants paying their respects. General Cuauhtémoc Delgado Monteagudo, the base commander, addressed the motorcyclists, drawing a connection between flying and riding: “To fly, we don’t need two wings; we need two wheels.” His words resonated with the bikers, underscoring the shared passion for adventure and freedom that binds motorcyclists and aviators.
Delgado Monteagudo emphasized the significance of events like this, which bring the armed forces closer to the civilian population. “These activities are vital for breaking down barriers and creating understanding,” he remarked. His sentiment was echoed by Enrique Sada Chelala, president of the Coyotes Club, one of the motorcycling groups in attendance. “At the end of the day, we’re all aiming for the same goal: a better country,” Sada Chelala noted, reflecting on how such encounters can challenge preconceived notions about the military.
The day concluded with the motorcyclists feeling the satisfaction of having ridden on one of the most coveted runways in Mexico, a privilege few get to experience. Beyond the thrill of riding through the airport, they had the chance to engage with those who protect the nation’s skies. Many participants expressed hopes for a repeat of the event, seeing it not only as a fun outing but also as an opportunity to build bridges between different segments of society.
The collaboration between the Mexican Air Force and local motorcyclist groups highlights the potential of such events to create meaningful connections. Events like these allow civilians to see the human side of the armed forces, fostering tremendous mutual respect and understanding. This experience’s impact went beyond the roar of motorcycle engines and the sight of military planes. It left a lasting impression on all involved, reinforcing the idea that, in the end, we’re all on the same journey.
