Tulum Airport Welcomes First Panama Flight

Copa Airlines inaugurates direct flights from Panama, marking a milestone for Tulum's airport and boosting regional tourism prospects.

TULUM, México – In a landmark moment for the region, the “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” International Airport in Tulum welcomed its inaugural direct flight from Copa Airlines, originating from the Hub of the Americas in Panama City. This new service, operating four times weekly without layovers, establishes a crucial link between Tulum and southern Quintana Roo with over 60 destinations across Latin America.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, joined by senior officials from Copa Airlines, enthusiastically greeted this inaugural flight, underscoring its significance for the state’s tourism industry.

“This is a historic day for Quintana Roo. The new route not only significantly enhances our air connectivity but also opens doors to a unique travel experience, allowing visitors to explore our beaches, cenotes, and the region’s rich culture and gastronomy, ” said Governor Lezama.

The Copa Airlines flight was ceremoniously welcomed with traditional honors, passing under an arch of water adorned with Mexican and Panamanian flags in the cockpit windows.

Governor Lezama expressed gratitude to the private sector and Copa Airlines representatives for their commitment to Tulum Airport’s growth and for contributing to sustainable and equitable development in southern Quintana Roo.

Since December 2023, “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” Airport has experienced notable growth, handling over half a million passengers and 4,330 operations in six months. Currently, the airport offers connections to nine routes in the United States, six domestic routes, and now adds the Panama connection. A route to Frankfurt is anticipated by December.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada, JetBlue, and now Copa Airlines operate at the airport. Lufthansa/Discovery is expected to join in December.

This development marks a pivotal moment in Tulum’s tourism infrastructure, positioning it as a gateway to Latin America and beyond. The direct flight service promises to boost tourism and strengthen Tulum’s appeal as a global destination.
