TULUM, Mexico—Just five months after beginning operations, the Tulum International Airport has significantly boosted the local economy by attracting a steady stream of tourists, primarily families, who arrive ready to explore everything this vibrant destination has to offer.
Since opening on December 1, 2023, the airport has rapidly become a crucial gateway for visitors, particularly with the start of North American airlines flying in March and anticipated European connections arriving in May. Weekly, the airport handles approximately 60 flights, according to data from the federal government.
Reyes Ávila Rodríguez, a sales agent at Infotours, has witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the airport. He notes that six out of ten tourists booking their services arrive via the Tulum terminal. These tourists, he explains, often travel directly from their arrival gate to the stunning accommodations available in Tulum before venturing out to the region’s famous beaches, cenotes, and the ancient ruins of Cobá and Tulum.
“The majority are families who come through the airport and then move on to other parts of the area,” Ávila Rodríguez said. His experience underscores not only the ease of access that the airport provides but also its role in distributing economic benefits across various commercial and tourism sectors.
Despite currently being the low season, Ávila Rodríguez remains optimistic. He anticipates that the daily flights from other Mexican states and international locations will sustain a flow of tourists who contribute economically to Tulum and beyond.
This optimism is shared among local businesses and service providers who see the airport not merely as a point of arrival but as a catalyst for regional development. The direct influx of tourists helps maintain a vibrant market for local enterprises, which can cater more effectively to the needs of visitors.
Looking ahead, Tulum faces the challenge of the upcoming low season, which lasts until mid-July. However, stakeholders are confident that the connectivity provided by the new airport will continue to attract visitors, helping to mitigate the seasonal fluctuations in tourist numbers.
As Tulum continues to evolve as a premier destination, the airport will undoubtedly play an integral role in shaping its future, making it more accessible to international visitors and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are felt throughout the community.
