As part of the area’s environmental protection program, the first beach cleanup of the Sea Turtle Sanctuary will take place on February 19th on the beaches of Xcacel-Xcacelito, where the general public is invited to participate.
Alejandro Arenas Martinez, in charge of the Sea Turtle Sanctuary state reserve, informed that the purpose is to remove garbage or solid waste brought by the sea currents and which represent contamination, so these activities contribute to the care of the sea turtle’s nesting habitat, a season which begins in April.
The interviewee announced that this initiative was at the request of the Tulum Circula project, which continuously carries out this type of activities in favor of the ecosystems. He indicated that the event will be held for two hours, from 8 to 10 in the morning, next Sunday, February 19.
“The initiative was taken to carry out this voluntary activity on February 19 of this year in order to protect the turtles, and also to take care of their habitat, since the sea currents are now bringing the sargassum and within the sargassum there is also garbage, which is organic waste from different parts of the Caribbean,” he said.
The aim is to make the beaches as suitable as possible so that the turtles can be successful in their nesting, which will begin next May.
Gerardo Nieto, director of the collection center of the Tulum Circula program, informed that on February 5 they carried out a cleaning day in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere, organized by environmental organizations of Tulum.
He explained that 47 people participated in this conservation activity, including volunteers and coordinators, to remove 396 kilos of waste and prevent it from becoming microplastics for our beaches.
“What matters to us as organizations is to make strategic alliances to protect and conserve the ecosystems of Tulum,” he said.
