Join the Celebration: Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins in the Riviera Maya

Celebrating the “Day of the Turtle” with an emotional ceremony, the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation, promoted by Bahia Principe Hoteles & Resorts and operating in Mexico for over 20 years, marks the official start of the sea turtle nesting season in the region. In addition to the ceremony, the foundation commemorates this important day by conducting environmental education activities with the students of Matilde Montoya School.

At precisely five o’clock in the afternoon, the nesting ceremony began at “Aventuras DIF” beach, where attendees witnessed the creation of a sand sculpture depicting a Loggerhead turtle. This impressive artwork, crafted by the artist Fred Balam Art, required over 8 hours of meticulous work. Balam Art was recognized for his outstanding contribution to ecological awareness and the protection of these endangered and significant species.

The Maya Community Center “Otoch Paal” participated in the ceremony, and the preschool children, dressed in traditional attire, performed a Maya song in honor of the sea turtles. The event concluded with a Maya ritual, during which all attendees, including guests, Tulum Country Club residents, and special guests from the “Otoch Paal” community center, offered flowers to convey their wishes for a successful season.

“We are thrilled to kick off the 2023 sea turtle nesting season, a year with new challenges. Following the customary procedures for protecting this species, we hope to achieve a spectacular season closure in October, with the participation of the foundation and the entire community,” expressed Yuritzi Espino, Manager of the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation.

The sea turtle conservation program of the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation achieved remarkable results in the previous season. A total of 1,621 nests of Loggerhead turtles and Green turtles (known locally as “Blanca”) were protected, and 146,969 hatchlings were released. Aventuras DIF Beach stands out as the most important nesting site for sea turtles.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the sea turtle nesting season begins in May and concludes in November. The incubation period lasts from 6 to 8 weeks, resulting in the hatching and release of turtles from July to November.

The efforts of the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation and its partners have proven critical for the survival and conservation of sea turtles. These magnificent creatures face numerous threats, including habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and poaching. Through their initiatives, the foundation not only safeguards the nesting beaches but also raises awareness among local communities and visitors about the importance of protecting these endangered species.

In addition to their conservation efforts, the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation focuses on environmental education, recognizing the significance of instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship in future generations. By engaging with students from Matilde Montoya School, the foundation imparts knowledge about the life cycle and ecological importance of sea turtles, fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world.

The commitment to sea turtle conservation extends beyond the foundation itself. Bahia Principe Hoteles & Resorts, as a promoter and partner of the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation, plays a vital role in supporting and implementing sustainable practices. Through their collaboration, they aim to create a positive impact on the local ecosystem and ensure the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures.
