TULUM, Mexico – Taxi drivers in Tulum are seeking a fare increase of 15 to 20 percent for their transportation services, according to Eleazar Sagrero Ordóñez, the secretary of the Tiburones del Caribe union.
He stated that they have already submitted the necessary requests for authorization of the fare hike as part of the Mobility Law.
In his capacity as the secretary-general of the Frente Único de Trabajadores del Volante (FUTV), he pointed out that at the state level, the 18 unions from the 11 municipalities in Quintana Roo have also submitted their requests.
“We have already submitted the requests because obviously, they have to evaluate them through the Board of Directors. Our state-level requests have already been submitted,” he emphasized.
He expressed that there has been an increase in the cost of gasoline, maintenance, and spare parts that are regularly used by transportation service vehicles.
“It’s complicated for us. We are seeking an increase of 15 to 20 percent, but they will have to evaluate it as part of the Mobility Institute. The increase in fuel, supplies, maintenance, and spare parts,” he underscored.
It is worth mentioning that in a survey conducted among the operator associates, they indicated that the current minimum fare is 50 pesos.
They mentioned that, for instance, a ride from the downtown area to the coastal zone costs around 250 pesos.
They pointed out that they have been charging these same rates for years, and now they hope that the authorities will approve this fare increase.
They reiterated that the rising costs, especially in Tulum, are evident both in spare parts and maintenance services, repairs, and, above all, the price of gasoline, which is above 23 pesos for regular and 25 pesos for premium.
On the other hand, residents of the ninth municipality stated that their wallets will be impacted, and they already see taxi services as a luxury due to the high costs involved.
