Secret to Tulum’s Success Revealed

TULUM, Mexico – In a historic first, Tulum, the picturesque municipality on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, has received a coveted nomination at the 2023 World Travel Awards (WTA) for the title of World’s Leading Beach Destination. This accolade extends beyond just Mexico and Central America, a region where Tulum has triumphed on five previous occasions.

Tulum’s Mayor, Diego Castañón Trejo, expressed his elation at this remarkable achievement and attributed it to the collaborative efforts put forth to maintain the pristine condition of the coastal areas. He particularly commended the dedicated team at the Municipal Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) for their unwavering commitment to daily beach cleaning, ensuring that Tulum continues to present an immaculate image to the world.

The Mayor underscored the critical importance of sustainability in preserving not only the enchanting beaches but also the natural wonders that surround Tulum. These encompass the expansive jungles and the rich diversity of flora and fauna. He urged both the workforce and the community, along with the visiting tourists, to actively contribute to the conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding the local natural resources.

“We are very pleased with the work we are doing as an administration. I want to express my gratitude to all my department heads, especially the team at Zofemat, who play a pivotal role in maintaining our clean and pristine beaches. We will continue to work for the betterment of all. I believe our tourist destination is our gem,” Mayor Castañón emphasized.

Tulum’s debut in this prestigious category at the “Oscars” of the travel and tourism industry marks a significant milestone. Furthermore, this renowned tourist destination has previously claimed honors such as the Best Beach Destination in Mexico and Central America, showcasing its regional excellence.

Voting for the World Travel Awards commenced on October 16th and will remain open until November 17th of this year, accessible through the World Travel Awards website.

It is noteworthy that in recent weeks, favorable ocean currents have played a role in substantially reducing the influx of sargassum, a type of seaweed, along the shores of Tulum National Park and the Punta Piedra area, enhancing the overall beach experience for visitors.
