Your Master Guide to Tulum’s Best Beach Clubs in 2023
Tulum, the once tiny, off-the-beaten-path beach destination tucked into Mexico’s Caribbean coastline, isn’t so tiny anymore. And neither is its offering of oceanfront hotels, bars and restaurants boasting their prized possession: beach access. Visit Tulum today and you’ll have your pick of a dizzying number of said beachfront locales, all awaiting your arrival with everything from daybeds and cabanas to craft cocktails and beachside bites, oceanfront massages to infinity pools-with-a-view. With so many options, which to choose?
Here, we’ve compiled our tried and true master guide to Tulum’s best beach hangs, ranging from affordable to luxury, zen vibes to party vibes, laptop-friendly to family-friendly and everything in between. We know details matter, so we’ve packed in tons of useful information including entry requirements and minimums, parking info, are towels provided, pool access, happy hours and more.
But first, a few Tulum beach club basics:
Can you get to the beach without going through a beach club? Yes! If you’re looking for a DIY beach experience without the service of a restaurant or beach club, you can simply enter at one of the few stretches of sand in Tulum with free, easy beach access. All are beautiful and include: Playa Las Palmas, Playa Paraíso, Playa Pescadores, Playa Santa Fe (this one has views of Tulum’s cliffside Maya ruins) and Playa Punta Piedra.
Are all Tulum beach clubs associated with hotels? Not all, but most. There are a few exceptions that are beach club-only, but for the most part you’ll be going through a hotel to get to their beach club and hence, the beach.
How do I get to, and around, the Tulum beach road? Whether you’re already staying on the Tulum Beach Road (also known as the Hotel Zone) or in Aldea Zama, La Veleta, Tulum Centro or otherwise, the most common way to get from one place to the other is by bicycle or taxi. Bike rentals are plentiful both along the beach road and in town, as are taxis. Please note there is NO Uber in Tulum, so be prepared to either flag down a taxi or have your accommodation help you arrange one. If you’re here for an extended amount of time you can also do what a lot of locals do – start building a list of reliable, go-to taxi drivers that you can message for on-call pickup (WhatsApp is your best friend here). Another option for getting around is to rent a car, scooter or even ATV for the duration of your stay, and you’ll find plenty of options for both in town as well.
I’m driving. Can I park my car? Most of the hotels/beach clubs in Tulum have their own parking, but not all. Of those that don’t, look for the nearest Estacionamiento (parking lot) which typically charge around $200.00 pesos (roughly $10 USD) for the day. With few exceptions, you should NEVER park your car in a random spot on the actual beach road in Tulum. We made this mistake once towards the south end of the strip and got towed, amounting to a stressful and costly experience (upwards of $250.00 USD) to get the car back.
Only park your car on the actual beach road if it’s clearly marked as designated parking for an establishment you’re going to – and even then it’s a good idea to ask and double check. OR if you’re headed to one of the public beach access points like Playa Punta Piedra or Playa Las Palmas, which typically have free roadside parking. Always look out for parking signs (remember that “E” means parking in Mexico!) and when in doubt, put your car in a lot and pay the fee. It may very well save you a lot of stress (and funds) later on!

BAGATELLE TULUM
Editor’s Note: The new Mexican-Caribbean outpost of legendary hospitality group Bagatelle, this day-to-night hot spot is one of Tulum’s most recent and highly anticipated openings. Editor’s Note: An easy choice for art aficionados, Pablo Escobar buffs or anyone who likes to see and be seen, this former home of the infamous drug kingpin is worth the splurge for an epic beach day on the south end of the Tulum hotel zone. Bought by renowned New York art collector and gallery owner Lio Malca in 2012, the original mansion has now been renovated and expanded into today’s Casa Malca: a luxury, 71-room boutique hotel filled with valuable pieces from Malca’s own art collection (think Keith Haring, Marion Peck and Jean-Michel Basquiat, to name a few) sprinkled throughout the property and beachfront.

We love it for it’s totally unpretentious and laid-back vibe, rustic-chic atmosphere (this place will transport you back to Tulum’s early days!) and refreshingly reasonable prices. Not just a beach club, Cinco also offers beachfront glamping for those truly wanting to spend the day (and night) in paradise.

Editor’s Note: Not a beach club at all, Hotel Bardo easily deserves a spot on this list nonetheless. Tucked into the jungle on the edge of Tulum Centro, this hidden gem is my & Alberto’s go-to for a peaceful, poolside day hang. Zen vibes abound as you enter the hotel and emerge into a beautiful open-air oasis, where you’ll find a restaurant, cocktail bar, fire pit and the chicest touches everywhere you turn – all centered around a stunning, sprawling swimming pool. Complete with consistently welcoming and friendly service, this secluded oasis is an easy choice to catch up on some serious R&R in Tulum.

Editor’s Note: A relative newcomer on the Tulum beach scene, Hotelito Azul opened its doors in December 2018, followed by the opening of its coveted rooftop in Summer 2019. As if the spectacular rooftop views and IG-worthy beach club weren’t enough reason to spend a day at Hotelito Azul, the friendly service, laid-back vibe and reasonable minimum (not to mention perks for Tulum locals) certainly are!

Editor’s Note: Think Flintstones meets Swiss Family Robinson meets seriously chic, and you have Ahau Collection’s Kanan: easily holding claim as one of the more unique offerings on the Tulum beachfront. The best way to experience Kanan? By reserving a private, elevated nest in its beachfront “treehouse,” complete with daybeds, fringed umbrellas and a bird’s eye view (literally and figuratively!) of the sparkling Mexican-Caribbean ocean. Don’t forget to take a dip in the oasis-like swimming pool, where you’ll find waterfalls, a secluded jacuzzi area and a swim-up bar.

Editor’s Note: La Zebra is easily a go-to spot to spend a beautiful day on the beach for a number of reasons. Another Tulum original, La Zebra has stood the test of time thanks to its friendly service, delicious Mexican cuisine, excellent craft cocktails (2×1 on Tuesdays!) and welcoming, fun and lively atmosphere. Admittedly biased, La Zebra also has a special place in my & Alberto’s hearts as we held our welcome dinner here for our Tulum I do’s in 2014. ❤︎

Editor’s Note: This one flies a bit under the radar and for good reason! A beachfront haven to truly get away from it all, those seeking peace, relaxation and zen vibes only should head to Maxanab. You won’t find parties, DJs or a “scene” here. Instead, you’ll find a beautiful boutique hotel committed to providing a calm, tranquil experience, in a seriously chic setting – pool goals included! A head’s up that when Maxanab is at full occupancy with hotel guests, they limit day visitors to just 10. Best to call ahead here and make a reservation if you have your heart set on a day of true tropical bliss.

Editor’s note: Alberto & I have been to MINA many times and are big fans! While it isn’t a beach club in and of itself, it’s one of our fave work-from spots on the beach road and thus deserves a spot on this list. We love MINA’s chill & relaxed vibe, comfortable tables (with ocean views!), power outlets, floor fans that they’ll set up right in front of your table upon request, reasonable prices and friendly, no-attitude service.
Want toes in the sand? You can head next-door to the affiliated Maria Del Mar Hotel and their beach club (plus pool)! We have reached out to Maria Del Mar and are currently awaiting a response on their minimums, pool access, etc. Once we have, we will update! In the meantime, please note the information below is specific to MINA only.

Editor’s Note: Head to the north end of Tulum’s beach zone and just before you reach the famed Mayan ruins, you’ll find Villa Pescadores: a laid-back, rustic-chic property paying homage to the town’s early days as a quiet fishing village. Our pick for a seriously chilled out day reminiscent of early Tulum, not to mention stunning views, attitude-free service and some of the more reasonable prices you’ll find around.
