Sargassum disposal site and sea barriers set for Tulum
Zofemat of Tulum has designated a disposal site for the municipality’s sargassum. Due to the early arrival of the brown seaweed across most of the state’s beaches, Tulum has also been forced to deal with it earlier than usual.
Melitón González Pérez, Director of the Tulum Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), reported on the designated site. He said that before the official start of a “very strong sargassum season”, the municipality has chosen a disposal site where the washed up beach seaweed will be transferred. He did not detail where that site was.
He also said that it will be toward the end of April when the Navy will place an anti-sargassum network off the coast in the National Park area to protect its public beaches.
“We continue to work in coordination because a very strong sargassum season is coming up, so we want to be coordinated to be able to make out as well as possible by being able to remove the algae from the beaches,” he said.
Pérez mentioned that during a recent meeting, there was a suggestion to have two sargassum vessels off the coast of Tulum collecting the sargassum at sea. The reasoning was simply to avoid mass landings on beaches.
