TULUM, Mexico – As the second half of 2024 approaches, a notable increase in German visitors to the airports of Cancún and Tulum is anticipated, heralded by Bernardo Cueto, the Tourism Secretary of Quintana Roo. This announcement comes in the wake of the Mexican Caribbean’s prominent participation in the Berlin 2024 International Tourism Fair (ITB), where Cueto emphasized the region’s successful showcasing of its 12 tourist destinations, enhancing its tourism offerings and strengthening connections with the German market.
In a telephone interview from the German capital, Cueto highlighted the establishment of two weekly flights from Frankfurt to Tulum International Airport and an additional three flights to Cancún International Airport, involving Condor and Discovery Airlines, part of the Lufthansa Group. This development is warmly welcomed by the state’s tourism sector, aiming to attract over 200,000 tourists in 2024 and bolster the presence of European travelers in Quintana Roo’s destinations.
Cueto also mentioned fruitful discussions with the World Tourism Organization, now known as UNWTO, about hosting an international forum in the Riviera Maya. Quintana Roo’s delegation at the ITB, running from March 5th to 7th, joins over 24,000 participants and 5,500 exhibitors under the theme “Defining the World of Travel Together,” sharing insights and experiences to shape the future of international travel.
Germany ranks as a critical market for the Mexican Caribbean. It is admired for its exploratory spirit and keen interest in cultural activities, archaeological site visits, and experiencing the region’s uniqueness, with destinations like Maya Ka’an, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya standing out. The current air connectivity, featuring 12 round trips a week on the Frankfurt-Cancún route by Condor and Eurowings, underscores the importance of maintaining and expanding international links to ensure a steady flow of tourists.
This development signifies a boost in international tourism and highlights Tulum’s growing appeal as a global destination. The direct flights are expected to increase accessibility, making it easier for German tourists to explore Tulum’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and unique ecological reserves.
