TULUM, Mexico – On Friday, October 6th, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador held his morning press conference from the ICA offices in Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo, where he shared exciting news regarding the tentative inauguration date for a significant section of the highly anticipated Tren Maya.

The Mexican President is currently immersed in a series of tours to assess the progress of the Tren Maya, a mega-project expected to be ready for inauguration by December of this year.

The Governor of the State of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, took to social media to announce that she joined President AMLO at the Tren Maya station in Cancún prior to the start of the conference.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed that Tulum Airport is set to be inaugurated on December 1st, with the intention of providing some relief to the continuously bustling Cancún International Airport due to the influx of tourists.

“This airport will be of great help, and we plan to inaugurate the Palenque to Cancún stretch of the Tren Maya on December 15th,” López Obrador stated.

“The fifth stretch will remain pending, but as companies are already working on it, I believe we can open the Cancún-Tulum stretch at the end of January,” the President added. He emphasized that by the end of that month, the entire 1,554-kilometer railway would be completed, paving the way for ticket sales for the Tren Maya.

During her participation in the morning conference, Lezama highlighted the increase in both national and international tourism in the region. She also emphasized that the arrival of the Tren Maya coincides with the 49th anniversary of the state of Quintana Roo, further underlining its significance in regional development.

After the conference, President López Obrador and Governor Lezama are expected to embark on a train journey to Yucatán to oversee the progress of the project.

This weekend, from Friday, October 6th, to Sunday, October 8th, the President is expected to continue his inspection tours in Yucatán aboard the Tren Maya. It is worth noting that he has not yet announced his arrival in the state of Campeche.

The Tren Maya, with a total length of 1,554 kilometers of railway, is being executed with significant public investment, amounting to nearly one trillion pesos this year, double the budget allocated in 2018 during the previous administration.

With less than three months until the inauguration of the Tren Maya, the federal government remains committed to its development and progress, as evidenced by the President’s previous tour on September 1st.

This project promises not only to enhance connectivity in the region but also to boost local tourism and the economy.
