TULUM, Quintana Roo – In a bid to enhance security measures in the region, personnel from the National Guard have arrived at the Tulum-Chetumal section of the Tren Maya, following an aggressive attack on workers involved in the mega construction project. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that employees had been injured in the incident, although he did not specify the exact number.
During his morning press conference, President López Obrador acknowledged that this was not the first time they had encountered similar situations in the area where the “El Jaguar” park is being developed. He highlighted the significant contribution of the National Guard stationed in Tulum in preventing land invasions and restoring order, as the region had been plagued by rampant land trafficking and invasion attempts.
According to local media reports, two workers were shot yesterday while engaged in construction activities along the Felipe Carrillo Puerto bypass of the Tren Maya. Following the attack, medical professionals at the local General Hospital promptly attended to the injured workers, who subsequently underwent surgery. As of now, their conditions have been reported as stable and out of danger.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the Tren Maya project and the risks endured by those working on its construction. While the endeavor holds immense promise for economic development and tourism growth, it also exposes workers to potential dangers.
The Tren Maya, a transformative railway initiative encompassing 1,525 kilometers, aims to connect major tourist destinations in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It seeks to foster regional development and boost tourism, with a particular focus on promoting sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
President López Obrador’s administration has committed significant resources to ensure the safety and security of the project, with the deployment of National Guard forces being one of the key measures. Their presence in Tulum has already proven instrumental in curbing land invasions, protecting the integrity of the “El Jaguar” park, and maintaining order in the area.
Efforts to complete the Tren Maya remain steadfast, despite occasional setbacks and security challenges. The project is a testament to the government’s determination to drive progress and create opportunities for the local population. However, incidents such as the recent attack underscore the need for continuous vigilance and strengthened security measures to safeguard the well-being of the workers and the project’s successful realization.
