Mexico’s President Announces Grand Opening of Tulum Airport and Tren Maya

TULUM, Mexico – In a momentous announcement, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed that two of his administration’s flagship projects, the Tren Maya and the Tulum International Airport in Quintana Roo, are set to be inaugurated by year-end.

During his fifth Government report, held in the city of Campeche, the federal leader emphasized that come December, the Tulum airport, bearing the name “Felipe Carrillo Puerto,” will be fully operational. Simultaneously, he underscored that the Tren Maya, boasting 20 stations and 14 stops, will also be ready in the same month.

“This development will connect communities, providing swift and secure transportation to both domestic and international travelers across five southeastern states. They will have the opportunity to explore a mystical and beautiful region encompassing beaches, tropical jungles, native flora and fauna, along with magnificent ancient Mexican cities, including pre-Hispanic marvels and the charming colonial city of Campeche,” he passionately declared.

Following his report, the President embarked on his maiden test ride aboard the Tren Maya. He boarded at the San Francisco station in Campeche and journeyed to Mérida, Yucatán, accompanied by prominent businessman Carlos Slim, owner of the ICA construction company, and members of his cabinet.

It’s worth noting that the colossal Tren Maya project broke ground in December 2018, and the grand opening is scheduled for December 1st of this year. The venture spans an impressive 1,500 kilometers of railway, interconnecting the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

According to the National Tourism Development Fund (Fonatur), ticket prices are set at 60 pesos for general admission, 80 pesos for foreigners, and a reduced rate of 30 pesos for students and educators.
