Stay safe this Holy Week: National Guard increases presence in Tulum

The Mexican government announced on Tuesday that it will deploy a total of 4,724 National Guard members in the country’s main tourist destinations, with the aim of ensuring the safety of visitors. In particular, in Cancun and Tulum, where an increase in violence has been recorded in recent weeks, 1,350 members will be deployed, with 1,125 in Cancun and 225 in Tulum, supported by two UH-60 helicopters and ground vehicles.

This security operation will also be carried out in Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Veracruz, where six helicopters, 377 Cheyenne trucks, 10 boats, 3,800 security elements on roads, 755 radio patrol cars, and 45 ATVs will be deployed. The security plan aims to ensure the safety of tourists in the country’s main tourist destinations and will be carried out without detriment to other areas of the country, as detailed by Luis Cresencio Sandoval, head of Sedena. “These will be the main areas that the plan will be addressing without detriment to other areas of the country.

In all of them, there will be National Guard personnel with vehicles and they will have the support of a helicopter,” Sandoval said. The measure comes after at least 12 murders were recorded in Cancun and Tulum over the weekend, which has raised concerns among tourists visiting these tourist destinations. With the presence of the National Guard, the Mexican government hopes to guarantee the safety of visitors and maintain the reputation of the country’s tourist destinations.

In addition, it’s worth noting that the deployment of the National Guard is just one part of the Mexican government’s efforts to address violence and crime in the country. The government has also launched a number of other initiatives, such as the “Safe Beaches” program, which aims to improve security measures in popular beach areas, and the “Territorial Control Strategy,” which seeks to combat organized crime and drug trafficking.

The government has also increased cooperation with international partners, such as the United States, in order to address cross-border crime and improve intelligence sharing. Despite these efforts, however, Mexico continues to face significant challenges in combatting violence and crime, particularly in regions where organized crime groups are most active.
