Since November 2022, the Tulum Sostenible cooperative has taken charge of the civic association Movida Maya, which continues the legacy and purpose of providing young people with social, cultural, and ecological spaces and teachings that keep them away from bad habits.

Emiliano Zarazúa, who now heads the association, said in an interview that the project, inherited from co-founders Julie Cassard and Anaïs Van Sull, has a very important social purpose and that since February 2023, they have reactivated all their activities.

“We are conducting activities with two groups, one from secondary school and the other from the Tulum Cecyte. We have several workshops: language and culture, nature, and sports. These are free activities offered mainly on weekends,” he said.

He added that they carry out practices such as gardening, composting, bird watching, and exercise in communities in the Maya areas of Tulum and Felipe Carrillo. He said that around 20 young people from both age groups of 12 years old participated, and parents also participated.

According to him, they had the support of their parents and he himself also paid, but now they are in the “red numbers,” so they are looking for sponsors. In this way, he had the help of government authorities, entrepreneurs, and the general public to advance towards this objective.

Donations can be made in cash or goods such as teaching materials, binoculars, books, cameras, and others.

Movida Maya began in 2017 in Chumpón, municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and in 2021, they opened a program in Tulum, whose mission is to strengthen the capacity of indigenous young people to preserve their cultural identity, to develop their own sustainable future, and to contribute to the sustainability of their community.

Likewise, the vision is to achieve a world where young people from indigenous peoples have all the resources to contribute to independent life in their families, communities, and society.

Expanding the text: Movida Maya is an organization dedicated to creating spaces and providing social, cultural, and ecological teachings for young people from indigenous communities in Mexico. The project, inherited by Emiliano Zarazúa, aims to provide a platform for the development of the youth’s identity and capacity to contribute to the sustainability of their communities.

Tulum Sostenible, a cooperative that promotes sustainable tourism, took over the management of the association in November 2022. Since then, they have reactivated all their activities and are now looking for sponsors to keep providing free workshops and activities.

The workshops are divided into three categories: language and culture, nature, and sports. Language and culture workshops aim to preserve and strengthen the cultural identity of the youth by teaching them about their traditions and beliefs. Nature workshops aim to create awareness about the importance of the environment and how to protect it. Sports workshops aim to promote a healthy lifestyle among the youth.

In addition to the workshops, Movida Maya also carries out practices such as gardening, composting, bird watching, and exercise. These practices aim to provide the youth with practical skills and knowledge that they can apply in their daily lives. They also aim to create a sense of community among the participants and their families.
