Tulum’s Urban Planning Programs Pave the Way for a Sustainable Future

TULUM, Quintana Roo – In recent developments, the municipality of Tulum has embarked on two comprehensive urban planning programs to ensure sustainable growth and preserve the natural environment. The first initiative, known as the Urban Development Program (PDU), encompasses the towns of Macario Gómez, Francisco Uh May, and Manuel Antonio Ay. The second program, called the Local Ecological Planning Program (POEL), encompasses the entire municipality.

Lorenzo Bernabé Miranda Miranda, the Director General of Municipal Sustainable Urban Territorial Development, revealed these plans, emphasizing the need to exercise control over the transitional zone’s development. The POEL is expected to be implemented within the next two to three weeks, and it will involve collaboration among the three levels of government, professionals, and the general public.

The PDU has been actively engaged in workshops for the past three weeks, where all sectors of society have been encouraged to participate and provide technical and social input, in accordance with regulations and laws.

Both the PDU and POEL initiatives are being funded by the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (Sedatu) as part of the Population Center Program, which aims to foster orderly, sustainable, and balanced growth and development.

Leading these programs is architect Libertad Vázquez Burgos, the Director of Sustainability. Although Lorenzo Bernabé Miranda Miranda did not provide a specific timeline for the completion of the opinion stages and subsequent presentation to the Municipal Council for necessary approvals, it is evident that progress is being made.

In light of Tulum’s growth, driven by projects such as the Tren Maya and the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, Miranda Miranda acknowledges the need to expand the municipality’s coverage both to the south and north.

He specified that a request has already been made to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) to extend municipalization up to the Aldea Tulum housing development, located at kilometer 221 of the Tulum-Felipe Carrillo Puerto federal highway.

Furthermore, there are plans to extend the northern section of the municipality up to kilometer 231, heading towards Playa del Carmen. However, these plans are contingent upon the response from SICT.

The municipality of Tulum is taking proactive steps to ensure that its growth is managed responsibly, considering both the needs of the local population and the preservation of its unique natural resources. These urban planning programs reflect a commitment to sustainable development and provide a framework for a balanced and prosperous future for Tulum and its residents.
