Cocoon Hotel & Resort Tulum: a haven of luxury and serenity by DNA Barcelona Architects

DNA Barcelona Modelers has marked a collaboration assention with ZAMA DESARROLLOS, the biggest and most prestigious genuine domain designer bunch of economical and coordinates situations of Mexico, found in Tulum. Together they will advance “COCOON” in Selvazama, a completely imaginative, aesthetical and mechanical lodging and private venture.

Motivated by the primordial sensation of the settle and the require of assurance, DNA planned a space where individuals feel grasped, ensured, giving a plausibility to reconnect with the inward self or with the community. The extend speaks to a complex of 46.181 m2 comprising of 3 private and 2 inn buildings “COCOON” with 204 lofts and 167 rooms as well as 16 private estates.

The recent boom in ecotourism has prompted architects and designers to create works that are in constant communication with and respect for the natural context, seeking inspiration in the forms, structure, and textures of nature. Following this premise, the architecture firm DNA Barcelona Architects, founded by architect Aryanour Djalali, designed an impressive hotel immersed in the tropical jungle of Tulum.

Inspired by the primordial feeling of protection and shelter, five “nests” were designed where guests will feel embraced and protected, creating a true escape from urban life and providing them with the possibility to reconnect with nature, the community, and themselves. This project represents a new concept of ecotourism and a great opportunity for connection with nature, inspired by the Caribbean and the tropical jungle.

The project, spanning 46,181 square meters, is developed on a 5.9-hectare plot of land, through 3 residential buildings and 2 hotels with a total of 204 apartments, 167 rooms, and 16 private villas. Additionally, it offers luxurious communal spaces integrated with nature such as gardens in the jungle, incredible open-air villas, a multipurpose pavilion, recreational areas, a restaurant, and a panoramic “nest” with breathtaking views of the Caribbean.

Each of the amenities and spaces serves to provide a unique experience and create a magical place for the guest through a rich vocabulary of visual elements that transform into a language of design, materials, and forms that represent Mexico and create biomimetic architecture. Likewise, the inspiration for each of the “nests” was centered around the creation of cenotes, as a point of interaction and social cohesion, and as an opportunity to experience the sacred rituals of the Mayans.

Biomimetic design is one that seeks to imitate natural models, systems, structures, and processes in order to solve human problems in a more practical and efficient way. The main objective of the project is to achieve a series of spaces that promote a balance of mind-body-soul, providing a true escape from everyday life while allowing guests to disconnect and relax in the best way possible. That is why the spa areas, saunas, and pools were carefully designed and played an important role in the project.

The study emphasizes the concept of sustainability by deeply respecting the ecosystem and biodiversity, using local materials that minimize the impact of construction, while promoting conscious use of materials and reducing waste generation. Rainwater harvesting is used for wastewater treatment and garden irrigation. As for electricity, the location of the complex allows for the use of solar panels, thereby avoiding large conventional electrical installations that can harm the ecosystem. Finally, and not least important, the “dry construction” system was used, in which there are no wet adhesives, the execution time is shorter, safety during construction is increased, and total sustainability of the project is emphasized.
