TULUM, Mexico – The contentious issue of tariffs imposed on carriers at Tulum International Airport has sparked concern among tour operators and local authorities. Sergio González Rubiera, president of the Mexican Association of Inbound Tourism Agencies (Amatur), has highlighted that the fees, substantially higher than those at Cancún’s counterpart, threaten to disincentivize the use of this newly promoted terminal at the International Tourism Trade Fair (Fitur).
The airport’s administration, overseen by military personnel, has set a fee of 4,400 pesos per unit per month for access to the federal zone, representing more than double what is charged in Cancún. This situation has prompted action from González Rubiera, who emphasizes the importance of adjusting these prices to maintain Tulum’s competitiveness as a tourist destination.
The concern is not only about the high costs but also about the operational limitations it imposes on tour operators. Unlike in Cancún, they cannot allocate multiple units to the airport without compromising other services. This restriction poses a significant challenge, as it could increase the cost of tourist operations and, therefore, affect both wholesalers and tourists.
Despite the complex scenario, González Rubiera remains optimistic about the efforts that the Ministry of Tourism and the state governor can make to sensitize the airport’s board of administration about the need to review and adjust the fees. The goal is to at least match those of Cancún, thus promoting greater fluidity in tourist mobility and preventing the possible redirection of flights to more accessible destinations.
It’s crucial to note that while some concessionaires offer luxury services with differentiated rates, tour operators handle prices integrated into vacation packages, suggesting that any tariff adjustment will directly impact the cost structure of tourism in Tulum.
The situation at Tulum International Airport highlights the tension between the operational and logistical needs of the tourism sector and the administrative decisions made from a perspective that, according to stakeholders, does not fully consider the dynamics of tourism. Dialogue between the parties will be key to finding a balance that benefits both Tulum’s tourism development and the visitor experience.
