Tulum’s Horizon Expands with Copa Airlines

TULUM, Mexico – Copa Airlines has launched a new era of connectivity to Tulum, with the announcement of the Tulum International Airport as the hub of three innovative routes. This strategic move by the Panama City-based airline extends not only its foothold to five destinations in Mexico but also signals what many locals are calling a new chapter of accessibility to the globally acclaimed tourist locale within the Riviera Maya.

Tulum is the third major opening of the Copa Airlines itinerary this year, in addition to Florianópolis, Brazil, and Raleigh-Durham, USA. The airline, a key piece of Copa Holdings, S.A., and a proud member of the global network Star Alliance launches these routes this June, enhancing its extensive network of up to 85 destinations across 32 countries in Central, South, North America, and the Caribbean.

Speaking from Panama, Pedro Heilbron, the CEO of Copa Airlines, brought home the centrality of his country as the link that cements two Americas. “Our commitment to bridge distances and foster connections is continuous. This strategic expansion is not only for cultural promotion but also boosts the economic, tourism, and business relations of the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. And moreover, it opens its doors, letting more tourists experience the wonders of Panama through our Panama Stopover program,” he noted.

Starting June 26, Copa Airlines will connect the magical city of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico, with the Hub of the Americas® in Panama. The Riviera Maya, among which Tulum is the best offer, is quite famous for its great nightlife, and authentic Mexican gastronomy, and is a neighbor to some of the best beaches worldwide, including Playa del Carmen, Xcaret, Akumal, and Xel-há. The city is famous for its Mayan Ruins, natural cenotes, and underwater caves.

The new route to Tulum International Airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, marks the fifth destination to be served in Mexico by this airline, joining flights to Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, and Monterrey already in place. Service to Tulum operates four times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Outbound flights will leave Panama at 7:45 a.m., landing at Tulum at 10:34 a.m., local time. The inbound flight leaves Tulum at 11:44 a.m., arriving in Panama at 2:23 p.m., local time.

The entry of Copa Airlines into Tulum represents one more example of the air carrier’s profound commitment to further promoting regional connectivity and economic development in the regions where it serves. It underscores the importance of Tulum as a significant tourist hot spot but also an emerging hub for international travel which promises to increase the local economy and enrich the cultural tapestry of the Riviera Maya.

This strategic move of the airline echoes the growing trend among international carriers to tap emerging markets and destinations, given that air travel remains a key enabler of global connectivity and economic development. The community stands to benefit from increased tourism, investment, and cultural exchange and sharing the natural beauty and heritage of Tulum with the world, as Tulum is getting set to host an even wider spectrum of international visitors.

As Tulum emerges as a major destination for travelers who wish to venture into adventures and cultures, new routes with Copa Airlines make a point of no return for the city to enter on the world travel map. These not only improve Tulum’s accessibility but also affirm the latter as one of the leading operators on an international level and promising only diverse benefits for guests and locals in all areas.
