TULUM, Mexico – As anticipation grows for the upcoming December opening of the Tulum International Airport, airlines are already positioning themselves to serve the enchanting Caribbean coastal town.
In a swift response to Viva Aerobus’s recent announcement regarding its forthcoming flights to Tulum from major Mexican cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana, Aeroméxico has swiftly followed suit. The airline issued a press release proclaiming its intention to inaugurate services to the Quintana Roo town on the very first day of December.
“Aeroméxico is poised to commence operations from Mexico City’s bustling International Airport (AICM) to the new Tulum International Airport starting December 1. This strategic move will significantly enhance connectivity with the picturesque Quintana Roo region, particularly with the captivating southern Riviera Maya,” the airline disclosed.
It’s noteworthy that December 1 is the precise date earmarked for the initiation of operations at the newly constructed airport, a project spearheaded by the Mexican army.
Aeroméxico elaborated that the AICM-Tulum route will be inaugurated with a robust schedule of 14 weekly flights, serviced by top-of-the-line Embraer 190 aircraft.
“This decision serves to fortify Aeromexico’s steadfast presence within the state of Quintana Roo. The airline takes pride in offering unrivaled connectivity and premier service not only to and from Cancún, Chetumal, and Cozumel but now extending to Tulum as well. The total monthly seat capacity will exceed 221,000, reflecting a remarkable 6% surge compared to current operations,” affirmed the Mexican national carrier. The airline also assured travelers that comprehensive itineraries and ticket sales would be promptly available in the approaching days.
José Zapata, Vice President of Sales for Aeroméxico in Mexico, expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “We are absolutely delighted to partake in the inauguration of this airport. Beyond the impressive facility that it promises to be, Tulum and the enchanting southern Riviera Maya are destinations cherished by many of our esteemed customers as their ultimate getaway.”
The official statement from Aeroméxico also highlighted the significance of the new route, emphasizing that it will serve as an additional travel option for domestic and international explorers hailing from diverse locations such as Tijuana, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, Toronto, San Francisco, and Chicago, among others.
With a government announcement dating back to 2020, the Tulum airport construction has surged to a commendable 65% completion, as per President López Obrador’s recent declaration on Thursday.
Furthermore, President López Obrador shared that one of the standout routes for the impending state-owned, army-operated airline, operating under the Mexicana banner, will connect the Felipe Ángeles International Airport to the heart of Tulum. This is a particularly noteworthy development given that Tulum, presently served by the Cancún airport located 130 kilometers to the north, is set to gain its own dedicated aviation hub.
