Unveiling Philia: A Remarkable New Experience at Papaya Playa Project in Tulum

The first edition of Philia, Papaya Playa Project’s new art and music festival on the Riviera Maya, took place last weekend with the presence of over 1,500 people over the course of three days. Among the headliners were the talented Monolink (Germany), Innellea (Germany), and HVOB (Austria), as well as national talents like Mystery Affair and Kalexis, who performed on different days and infused energy into the satisfied attendees until the early hours of the morning.

For a first edition, Philia got off to a great start in Papaya Playa Project’s Tulum hotel zone in Quintana Roo. Throughout the days, attendees enjoyed concerts accompanied by the sea breeze, human warmth, and a festive atmosphere, creating a connection with the natural beauty of Tulum in the Mexican Caribbean.

Papaya Playa Project’s initiative with Philia is to create an all-encompassing weekend with complementary activities for overall well-being, such as artistic installations, therapeutic workshops, and a curated musical program that accompanies the experience.

Ten years ago, Papaya Playa Project, together with Design Hotels™, set out to discover a new form of hospitality by merging local culture, art, music, and sustainability, to create original and aspirational hospitality experiences that connect with the jungle and the environment, allowing guests to disconnect from the chaotic world for a moment.

This project focuses on a sustainable and responsible Tulum that can serve as a model for hotel development in the region, with little alteration to the natural ecosystem along a stretch of just under a kilometer, making it an ideal place to spend time alone while enjoying the views of the sea.

During the Philia weekend, artists such as Robag Wruhme, known for his unconventional techno productions, Jenia Tarsol, rising within the international electronic music scene, and Isolée, who made a name for himself with his song “Beau Mot Plage” as one of the most influential tracks of the ’90s, according to Pitchfork magazine, completed an itinerary with self-exploration and well-being sessions through a program with temazcals, cacao ceremonies, and sound healing in a video and sound room.

As part of the amenities that accompanied Philia, there was a small vintage market with accessories, clothing, and food that undoubtedly encouraged a fantastic time to enhance the DJ performances. International and national food such as panuchos and burritos were available to all attendees, creating an incomparable festive atmosphere.

People of all nationalities gathered, from American, Asian, European, Latin, and of course, national tourists, creating a unique diversity, but driven by the feeling of fun, music, and spending an unforgettable time with the sea as a witness.

Apart from Philia, the hotel has recurring festive spaces, such as The Full Moon every night of the full moon to celebrate life and the wonders of the universe. An experience that, seen from a more mystical perspective, has the power to amplify emotions.

In short, Papaya Playa is a place that combines nightlife with music events, such as Philia in this case. Its offering of natural spaces that match perfectly with the curated decoration that extends to the smallest details of the rooms, villas, and restaurant with vernacular architecture and local materials. An option to live with your partner, friends, or family.
