TULUM, Mexico— The “Diablillas de Hondzonot” softball team from Tulum was honored as special guests at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning conference at the National Palace this Monday. Dressed in traditional huipils and barefoot, they accompanied Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama and were recognized. They sat in the front row, where they listened to media presentations and questions.
The Diablillas, known for playing barefoot and in huipils, stand out for their skills on the field and commitment to preserving their Mayan culture. This unique team, composed of women aged 14 to 37, includes mothers, housewives, grandmothers, artisans, seamstresses, students, and workers united by their passion for softball.
The team’s first official game in Huipils was on October 2, 2018, marking the beginning of their journey towards national and international recognition. Since then, they have participated in numerous tournaments and inspired many with their story of perseverance and dedication.
During the conference, President López Obrador showcased a video highlighting the team’s skills and took a photo with them, emphasizing the Diablillas’ importance as ambassadors of their culture and sport. The players presented the president with a softball glove, symbolizing their gratitude and commitment to the sport.
The Diablillas not only play softball; they are also a symbol of resilience and overcoming adversity. Initially, they faced criticism and limitations in their community but persevered and are now a source of pride for Tulum and the Mayan region. Their story has even caught the attention of Netflix, which is in talks to produce a movie about their inspiring journey.
In addition to their athletic achievements, the Diablillas are known for their skill in embroidering the huipils they wear during games. This adds an element of authenticity and cultural pride to their attire. Their connection to their roots and ability to overcome obstacles has symbolized female empowerment in the region.
Their visit to the morning conference not only celebrated their achievements but also highlighted the importance of sports as a tool for inclusion and social development in rural communities in Mexico. With continued support from the government and the community, the Diablillas de Hondzonot continues to break barriers and demonstrate that with passion and dedication, anything is possible.
