TULUM – México, October 3, 2024. Although transportation fees at Tulum’s airport have been lowered, making them more competitive, many tourism agencies still express dissatisfaction, arguing that these rates remain high compared to other airports. This has created a financial challenge for local operators.
“The new rates are much better and more competitive. The issue was that the airport’s management didn’t consider the public price; we paid the airport. So, if the cost was excessive, we absorbed the loss, and although the fees are still somewhat high, the situation has improved,” explained Sergio González Rubiera, president of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMATUR).
For tourists, a standard transportation fare between Tulum International Airport and downtown Tulum is approximately $50. For luxury transportation, the price can rise to $90. A trip to Chetumal could reach as high as $290, highlighting the pricing disparity between different destinations.
Tourists who book packages through a tour operator often have transportation included, while those arriving independently rely on taxis or bus services like ADO. This option is commonly used by travelers seeking more affordable alternatives to private transport.
As reported by The Tulum Times, back in August, Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Tourism announced a collaborative effort between Governor Mara Lezama and the management of Tulum International Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto.” This led to the publication of the new transportation access fees in the Federal Official Gazette, governing sporadic access to the federal zone designated for tourist ground transportation.
These new rates specifically target companies that provide pre-arranged services, such as travel agencies and timeshare companies operating within the Tulum region. Despite these adjustments, the ongoing debate underscores the financial pressures faced by operators as they try to remain competitive in an increasingly costly market.
