A fire devoured seventeen houses made of local materials in the irregular neighborhood of 2 de Octubre, in Tulum, on Saturday morning; there were no fatalities or injuries. Firefighters reported that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.
The fire was reported around 11:40 am, mobilizing the emergency services, who arrived at Mercurio Street between Centauro and Orion. According to initial reports, the fire originated in a house and soon spread to other houses made of organic material, preventing neighbors from reacting to control it.
Manuel Castilla James, director of the Fire Department, detailed that they had counted 17 houses consumed by the fire, although the residents of the area estimate that about 30 houses were affected in some way.
The site was attended by elements of the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection, as well as the Quintana Roo Police, National Guard, Navy and Civil Protection; while firefighters took three hours to extinguish the fire completely.
Martha Pérez, a Tren Maya worker, said that she was working when she was informed that the fire had consumed her home; upon arriving, she found that she had lost money, belongings and personal documents.
Another of those affected, Alejandro Gutiérrez, said that 15 days ago he arrived from Chiapas to work on a construction site and settled in this irregular zone. After returning from work, he found what had happened at the site.
